How to fish a Point on Lake Guntersville
As I have said in some of my other articles, points in the summer on Lake Guntersville are ideal spots to spend time in the heat of the summer; if they are pulling water, it is even more imperative that you fish points! How to fish a point is even more important as there is a technique and pattern that helps you become successful!
You first must start with your electronics, if you see baitfish or other bass moving about you are probably in the right location; check out the edges as the bait will hide along the edges to avoid the current and the bass will hide downstream and face upstream so the current pushes them into the feeding spots for the bass. The first positioning I do is start by casting across the point allowing your bait to work from shallow on top to the deeper edge. Next, I work along the edges working the first drop off the edge where the bass can hide in their ambush locations. The first drop is always an excellent location for bass to hide as the shallow water near the top has the most structure or grass, so it makes hiding easier for a bass. When there is current, I focus on the downstream side focusing on the grass or structure the bass may be hiding in. The downstream side allows you to pull your bait into the face of the bass that are hiding and looking for food being pulled into them.
Bait choices are always important when fishing points as you need to cover water yet get good action from your bait to attract a bite. I like swimbaits in this approach as they have a grass protective arm that protects the bait from totally clogging up in the grass or structure along the first drop of the point. Weed guards really offer help in keeping your swim bait free from hanging up allowing you to pull it slowly and let it drop into the holes and structure in the grass as you pull it though the first drop. They also add to the movement of the bait as it helps deflect the bait off the structure causing reaction bites! Smart fishing, impressive results are common with good technique and decisions!
