How Rain Affects Lake Guntersville in March
There is always a debate on the affect rain has on fishing on Guntersville, we all have our beliefs, and it varies from person to person, but my thoughts are driven from my many days on the water over time. March can be a tricky time of year not only rain, but fronts are a constant battle for a fisherman as it moves the fish from one location or pattern to another making it difficult to set yourself into a consistent pattern this time of year. Rain can be your friend, but it really depends on the volume of rain we are getting during this time pattern.
Light rain is your friend, and many times improves the bite as it slightly stains the water, creates a cover from bright sunny days, and pushes the bass up to the feeding areas of the lake. Bass become more aggressive in the light rain, the movement of the water is remarkably similar to the light winds as it shields the water, and they can see and react when this occurs. Heavy rain push the fish toward clearer water as it muddies up the water, reduces their visibility, and slows their feeding pattern down. Heavy rain with lightning forces them to hide and about shuts down their feeding pattern to a complete halt.
Your strategy in March on Lake Guntersville is really fairly simple; first, look for slightly stained water as it will have good visibility for the bass to see and hence feed. The bait will move to less stained water and bass will follow them, creating good feeding conditions. Look for moving water near creek mouths; creeks running out of the muddy water to the slightly stained areas will be their pathway away from the heavy stained water. Let the conditions lead you to the feeding areas with knowledge and you will be much better off.
March bass fishing on Lake Guntersville is all about letting the weather conditions help you adjust correctly, wind, rain, lightning, sun, cold fronts, all present different conditions and force you to adjust. If you make the right ones, you will reap the benefits.
