TVA is the Key to August Fishing on Lake Guntersville

Lake Guntersville being part of the TVA system is important to bass fishing in August, and the generating of power is everything to the location of bass and their feeding behavior. Certainly, water temperature, weather and season all are part of the equation, however current in the heat of August determines when the bass feed and where they position with respect to the current.

Most anglers notice that the bass turn on when the water starts moving from current, the reason for that is because current sets the table and positions the food source so the bass will feed and chase, forcing the bass to become aggressive! As the current moves the water when TVA generates electricity the moving water pushes the shad and other bait fish into predictable feeding areas for bass. It also positions the bass into to their feeding areas on ambush points and around bottom structure as the bait tries to escape the current. This also gives the bass defined feeding windows and make the timing of the movement a habit for bass to relocate to the feeding zones when they sense the water movement. These feeding zone areas not only increase the predictability of where they locate but it increases oxygen in those areas giving the bass energy and makes them competitive for food. While bass normally roam a lot current forces the bass to position where the food is carried directly to them from the current.

When current occurs the bass position on offshore grass edges as they sit on the downstream side of the hydrilla or eelgrass waiting for there prey to wash into their faces so they can easily feed. River ledges become very productive when August current is washing down the side of the ledge; especially the areas where hard bottom areas exists around shell beds or nearby grass edges with steep drops. Creek channel areas that meet the main river ledge become super feeding zones as it creates natural zones for the bass to feed and has impressive edges for the bass to position on. Main river points, roadbeds and rock along these areas are natural feeding zones and shouldn’t be ignored. Find the current breaks and you find the bass use the natural bottom changes to your benefit and you will be a better August fisherman on Guntersville.
