Why Bass Locate in Certain Spots

It’s a question I get all the time from my customers, “why are these fish here,” the answer although can be complex and lengthy narrows down to the surroundings. What is near bye, what do the contours look like, is there deep water around, in general the answer is in the details? If you’re going to be a great angler the details need to be your friend; there is only one way to figure it out and that is to study all the aspects around these particular fish being in this specific area. Of course, with the on-set of today’s electronics you can find the answers if you just search the surroundings with your technology.

It is not spots you’re digging for when you’re fishing it’s better defined as what this location is all about; when you figure this out your next spot will be easier to locate. I always enjoy a customer that is trying to learn “why” fish are in one spot over another because their questions are teaching moments for me and learning moments for them. The key is in the details!

What depth the fish are in is the first key to success, always be aware of the depth range as it is the number one tell-tale for the next bite. This type of structure is also an important key to fish location, even in a lake like Guntersville where the grass is plentiful is a key as they may be in the grass but there are many different variations of grass on Guntersville. Eel grass, hydrilla, milfoil, coon-tail, star grass is some of the different variations and each tells a different tale. They all grow in Guntersville and many are specific to certain areas and depths on the lake. When you can dissect the grass type you have a good chance of repeating the pattern at your next move. Depth around your fish location is also a key factor; bass like escape routes and having certain depths and drops near their location can be important. Bass generally does not hang in the flats unless it’s near the spawn and even then depth nearby is a big factor as to why certain fish are located in a specific area. Understand the details and you will catch more fish!
