Bass Spawn on Lake Guntersville, Keys to Understanding
As we progress into the month of March the bass will move into the spawning beds and start the spawning process. The keys to understanding the process are many but becoming educated in their movement will be your best friend so you can follow the process and be on top of the fish as they move into beds.
Pre-spawn to the spawn is not complicated on Guntersville but it is an ever-changing process that starts with water temperature, bass body readiness and patterns that will repeat itself over the years. The locations may change but the process will be remarkably similar year after year. Your job will be to understand it all so you can locate the bass. A key to remember is that not all the bass will move into the spawn at the same time, it will be gradual based on their body readiness as the water warms. The spawning process can be a month long or more so it will be a continuous process over time.
The first key is water temperature at or near 62 degrees when you start seeing this occur the bass are on the move toward the beds and the spawning process is on its way. Bass move toward the beds with underwater highways like, old rod beds, creeks, boat paths these are all travel routes that the bass move on. Guntersville is a flooded impoundment full of old pathways, like roadbeds and the like. Bait fish also move on these pathways making the bass move as the bait moves toward the hard bottom areas of Guntersville. The key to finding the beds is the real test as bass will spawn on the hard bottom areas; Guntersville has an enormous amount of tree stumps, red clay, gravel areas, shell beds and more of these hard bottom spawning areas. If you find the hard bottom areas, you are at an 80% chance of finding spawning beds. Look for holes in the grassy areas that the bass have carved out for their spawning process; when you see cut out holes you are in the beds and now you can look for the bass spawning with your Costa sunglasses.
Fish slow, precise, use soft plastics, use your bait to entice the bite with movement and accuracy while casting and you will have a successful spawning fishing time on Lake Guntersville.
