Fishing Report, Month of December Lake Guntersville
December on Guntersville can be difficult as it is the beginning of the cold weather, and the fish are generally not very active; this December however was very good; the bass were on the move feeding even in the cold water. Catches were good with good numbers and excellent size for this time of year. Anglers were tickled to death with the results, especially early in the month of December, as Lake Guntersville continued to be one of the bass fishing destinations in the country. This December we were met with some big weather changes we went from cold to hot weather, and the water temperature changed almost 10 degrees during the weather change. Patterns changed drastically as the fish moved from the shallow to the deep and back to the shallow water again, making every day different as one pattern worked one day and changed the next!
Bait fish movement was key to finding active bass, there was huge bait balls roaming about, and that continued to be the key to finding active fish. Main river points, back-channel ditches, creek beds and grass edges with bait were key to catching bass. If you could find the bait you were a very happy fisherman.
As always is the case in December tournaments were down as the holidays slowed things down for the month; you had the lake to yourself most of the month and if you could take the weather changes you had lots of fun and caught lots of fish.
The jerk bait bite became front and center as the Duckett sinking jerk bait was a great bait during the cold part of December as they moved deep during those cold days. When the bites were good the bait selection changed drastically as there were days when the crank bait bite was great SPRO Aruka Shad rattle bait allowed you to make great catches when you found the correct depth.
December tips were much like November as reaction baits were key, following the bait fish, covering water efficiently with search baits and spending time on the water in the late part of the day for peak activity was paramount as it produced really well! Adjusting from cold water techniques to warming trends techniques was key. Lastly, your electronics were paramount to finding bait and schooling bass.
