Habits of Big Bass

It’s no surprise to me that the bigger bass have habits just like us older folks do as we age in life. We like things easy; we like things in our life to be protected and we enjoy a good meal. I’m here to tell you that the big bass have some very similar habits. It’s no secret that we are stuck in our ways, we are habit oriented and repeat many of our daily habit’s day in and day out as routines lead our life.

Big bass are not much different as studies show that big bass are very regimented in their daily lives, they stay close to a home base or area and venture out to feed on a schedule that repeats itself over and over, allowing you to fish their habits and time up their feeding and movement. Big bass because they have aged as we all do, keep to themselves they don’t want to challenge for food or fight the elements, so they stay close to home and find cover in the thickest cover like heavy grass or thick stump fields. They want to stay protected so there body position will always be backed up to cover for protection and they will feed in the holes of the deeper cover. They like easy meals, so dying bait fish created by small schooling fish above them are all easy meals. As they will stay below the small schooling bass chasing bait and pick off the easy wounded bait as it falls below the chasing bass above.

Big bass get big because they feed on bigger targets, they don’t feed as much as the small fish do and they only feed certain times of the day in a routine that you can count on. When they feed, however, they choose bigger targets, meaning that big baits generally catch bigger fish. Similar targets get similar results, so when you find a bait that is firing up the bigger bass your chances of repeating the results are very high. Lastly big bass hang in safety zones and points with sharp drop offs are safety areas that they can back up too and feed with ease and know they will be able to get to a safe place easily if they need too.
