Late February early March on Guntersville, Baits of Choice

As we move closer to the spawn the late February bite will be all about the right bait in the right place at the right time. Late February early March will be about change you will still have to force some bites as reaction baits will be the key before they settle in for the spawn. It is also a time when we will see lots of windy days causing you to have to utilize the wind as a source of cover and will help the bite all month long.

Some proven baits over the years has been a couple of my favorite baits for many years and one of them for most of my fishing career. Spinner baits have been commonly known for their effectiveness in the wind as the flash is one of the best reaction baits ever. With March being a windy month and most of the grass eroding away from the lake flash kicking up dirt off the bottom of the lake will be a highly effective bait. Slow rolling a spinner bait could be your ticket to your personal best as it attracts massive fish and good numbers during the early days of March. It will take patience as conditions in the wind are not easy to deal with sometimes, especially winds out of the southwest on Guntersville as it is one of most damming wind conditions on Lake Guntersville. As a note of interest, the Guntersville record bass of 14 lbs. 8 oz was caught on a spinner bait in late February 1991.

Chatter baits are my second choice in early March as their vibrations are just fish catching machines on Guntersville; one key to remember about them is the heavier the chatter bait the more vibration you get as the bigger blade cause more movement. Color is also a key ingredient for a chatter bait to be successful so read the water clarity and choose the correct color in order to be successful. Remember clear and bright colors go together and muddy and dark colors team up for success. Matching the watercolor to the bait is the best way to choose the correct color. Success in early March is about choices making the right ones and success will follow!
