My Favorite Deep Techniques

When you get on the water in the heat of the summer sometimes you just have to be prepared to fish in 20 plus feet of water, cooler water temperatures and shell beds producing oxygen many times force you too. Bass have low tolerance for low oxygen levels, and they move to the areas producing the most oxygen as the summer moves on. That gives you many options depending on the type of cover you have on the lake, your fishing, one of those is going deep and looking for schools of fish. I have some favorite deep fishing techniques I turn too when I look for those deep schools of fish.

First, is a deep crank bait no bait in my arsenal can be more fun than pulling up on a deep school of fish and having them compete for your bait. When that happens, they hit hard and aggressively and many times you can double up and the fun is off the charts. Cranking in deep water can load the boat in a short period of time, it can make the difference in a tournament and put winning money in your pocket.

Next, is a jigging spoon, and easy bait to present; anyone with very little experience can catch fish on it and it puts big fish in the boat. It’s nothing more than a cast and continually letting it drop to the bottom and popping it up and repeating. The downside is big jigging spoons have big treble hooks and catch everything on the bottom so be prepared not only will you catch bass, but all species will hit it and it hangs on those deep stumps and losing and expensive jigging spoon can be costly.

Lastly, I like big football jigs as they are easy to crawl on the bottom emulating a crawfish as you drag it. There are many versions of football jig presentations so don’t limit your thoughts to a traditional football jig but also look at swivel football heads as they work just as well and give a little different look on the bottom as you can bait it with any soft plastic crawfish look. Go deep in the heat and you’ll have a blast!
