Lake Guntersville Fishing Report Month of May
May was quite different than we have seen in many years on Lake Guntersville, the weather was very unstable forcing you to search every day, where in the past years May was stable weather allowing you to go back to fish in the same area’s day after day. That alone lowered the numbers as consistency of bite was just not there! We caught fish every day it was just harder to find them in the same locations lowering the numbers while increasing the search time. The bass moved off their shallow patterns and by the end of the month the bigger fish were moved to deeper locations.
Baits were fairly typical as we started the month with the shad spawn allowing you to use faster moving baits lime Tight-Line swim jigs, Duckett spinner baits. The crank bait bite that is really strong in May was slowed tremendously for me as the bass never gathered in the deeper grass in any consistent pattern and it affected this bite. Normally by the end of May we are fishing the bream beds as the bream are loaded with bass feeding up on them. I personally never found the beds loaded up at all! By the end of May we were deep into a worm bite pattern again, quite different than past years.
As we move into June, we should see the bream bed pattern improve but I have my doubts as it just does not appear that the weather will become consistent at all; it is warming quickly and could easily change that pattern also. I believe we will see the bass load up along the grass edges as they look for oxygen from the grass and becoming more of a summertime pattern than past Junes have proven to be. We should also see the heat in June change the fish and move them deeper into the grass allowing those who enjoy the forward-facing sonar fishing the strongest of the season. Those of you who enjoy flipping heavy grass is near as that should be strong in June.
The bite will be good in June, but it will be more of a finesse pattern of fishing so your patience will be needed. Enjoy June it is a fun time on Lake Guntersville call today to book your day on the water.
