As we approach winter fishing on Lake Guntersville, we will see many things change from patterns to techniques and the type of baits we are fishing with. Guntersville is well known for its winter big fish bites and presenting the baits that will catch those big fish will be key to your success. My favorite winter baits start with the Rattle trap; its speed and noise are the keys to its success. Presentation is everything with a rattle trap, learning to utilize its versatility is what makes it a great bait for Guntersville. Rattle traps can be fished in so many ways that it becomes a very versatile bait for Guntersville. Your job is to find the presentation that attracts the bite and make it work for you!

The next bait for me is a flat sided crank bait like many of the SPRO Little John 50 flat sided crank baits or the Berkely Fritz side, not only do these baits catch cold water fish but they are a great bait for an inexperienced fisherman as they are easy to use and have great reputations on Guntersville. I have found that the wobble of flat sided bait is the difference maker for this time of year; they produce a tight wobble making this bait incredibly attractive in the colder water. You can also purchase many different models to get them down to different depths making flat sided baits extremely attractive for the different grass depths we see this time of year on Guntersville.

My next favorite for the winter is not only my favorite for the winter, but it is a bait I have success with 12 months a year, fishing a swim jig with a swimbait trailer is for me the most productive bait I have used in the last 10 years. It catches fish and in the chilly water, it is a great search bait in chilly water and its bait that you can utilize over grass as it has a great weed guard on most manufacturers’ swim jigs. Being able to utilize a swim jig down to different depths is a key factor on Guntersville as you can swim it over the grass, through the grass or down to 20 ft. if necessary.
